CNN —Wholesale inflation picked up in April to its highest rate in a year, as price hikes continue to weigh on American businesses and hamstring the Federal Reserve’s plans to cut interest rates. While higher energy costs (up 2% in April) pushed goods prices higher, services inflation is what drove the overall PPI higher. Even when excluding the volatile components of food and energy, “core” PPI accelerated instead of slowing as economists had anticipated. The core index was up 2.4% for the 12 months ended in April — the highest annual rate since August of last year. March’s core PPI was revised down to show that prices fell 0.1% from March and rose 2.1% annually.

Wall Street is increasingly divided over whether the Fed will cut interest rates by Election Day. New inflation data out this week will go a long way toward settling that question, as polls show that President Biden is struggling to convince voters that he’s done a good job on the economy. A first-quarter uptick in inflation has forced the Fed to keep borrowing costs at a 23-year high. Economists see a slight improvement, forecasting that April’s Consumer Price Index report on Wednesday will show that inflation moderated slightly last month. (Economists will also be watching Tuesday’s Producer Price Index and retail sales data on Wednesday.)

However, the latest reading is still better than last May, when inflation was running at 4%, versus the latest reading of 3.5%. Long-run inflation expectations also rose, to 3.1% from 3.0% in April. Since inflation expectations can effectively control the pace of price hikes, businesses take those expectations into account when pricing goods and services. The survey suggests that the recent optimism consumers had about the state of the economy is waning.

First-time applications for unemployment benefits climbed last week to 231,000, the highest level since last August, in another sign that the labor market is cooling.

Employers added 175,000 positions, less than economists had expected and well below the average over the last year; and the unemployment rate climbed to 3.9 percent. “But really, the slowdown shouldn’t be a big surprise, and isn’t particularly worrisome.”Layoffs remained low and most job sectors appeared stable. CNN —The total solar eclipse has come and gone, but sky-gazers have reason to keep looking up — a meteor shower will peak this week right before a full moon rises. The Lyrid meteor shower will be most active Sunday night through the early morning hours of Monday, according to the American Meteor Society. And April’s full moon, also known as the pink moon, reaches the crest of its full phase at 7:49 p.m. The pink moon actually got its moniker due to its annual appearance not long after the start of spring, much like its namesake, a hot pink wildflower called Phlox subulata that blooms in early springtime, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Instead, an annular solar eclipse creates a “ring of fire” in the sky as the sun’s light surrounds the moon.

NASA estimates that 215 million adults across the US saw the 2017 eclipse directly or virtually. SpaceX's Starship launches on its second test flight from the Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, on Saturday morning. The method was used to separate the Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket after liftoff. Then, the spacecraft’s flight termination system was triggered to prevent it from veering off course, bringing an early end to the test flight. After April’s explosive first test flight, SpaceX noted “success comes from what we learn, and we learned a tremendous amount.”

CNN —Federal regulators have granted SpaceX permission to launch a long-awaited second test flight of its Starship system — the most powerful rocket ever built — following an explosive first attempt in April. The agency then completed a safety review on October 31 for SpaceX’s planned second test flight. That process concluded on November 14, according to a statement from the agency, allowing FAA to issue the launch permit. Environmental concernsSpaceX may also face additional pushback from environmentalists ahead of — or in the wake of — the second launch attempt. The group of environmental and wildlife advocates that previously sued the FAA could still attempt to seek an injunction to stop the next launch.
